Baseball Splits Conference Doubleheader with Worcester on the Road

WORCESTER, Mass – Saturday, the Buccaneers traveled to Worcester State to take on the Lancers in the first two games of the three-game MASCAC weekend series. It took nine innings in game one but the Bucs pulled out the 6-5 win and fell in game two 8-4.

 

Game One

How It Happened

Maritime struck first in game one on a home run by Jackson Simone (Seattle, Wash) in the top of the first innings.

The Buccaneers held on to their 1-0 lead in to the fourth inning where they extended the lead to 2-0 on a Dylan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass) double, scoring Simone. In the bottom of the frame, Worcester cut the Maritime lead in half on a double, plating a run.

The Lancers tied the game and then took the lead, 4-2, in the bottom of the fifth scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly to right field and another on a Maritime miscue.

In the bottom of the sixth, Worcester extended their lead to three, scoring on a single to centerfield.

Down 5-2, the Buccaneers needed a big inning in the seventh and they got just that. Angus McNeil (Middleton, Mass) hit a three-run blast to right field, scoring Sullo and AJ Luciano (Lynn, Mass) in the process to tie the game at 5-5.

With the Lancers unable to score in the bottom of the inning, the fans got some free baseball as the game went in to extras. Neither team scored in the eighth inning but, in the ninth, the Buccaneers took the lead by way of a passed ball, scoring Luciano. Up 6-5, Maritime shut down Worcester in the bottom of the ninth, taking game one by a score of 6-5.

At The Plate

Worcester batted 7-for-30 in game one. Two played had multi-hit games for the Lancers. Michael Ferrara had three RBI for the host.

The Lancers walked 11 times in the game, struck out seven times and left 11 runners on base.

Maritime batted 8-for-32 in game one. Simone, Sullo and McNeil each had two hits in the game. McNeil drove in a game-high three runs on his home run

Simone and Sullo each hit doubles in the game while Simone and McNeil each hit a home run for four total extra base hits for the Bucs.

The Buccaneers walked three times, struck out three times and left four runners on base.

 

Game Two

How It Happened

Maritime struck first again in game two, this time on a Nick Haley (Hanson, Mass) ground out, plating Paul Sances (Middleboro, Mass). But, the lead did not last long as in the bottom of the first the Lancers tied the game and took the lead, 7-1. Ferrara brought in two runs on a double to right center, Galvin drove in two on a double to left center and Kolanda brought two across on a second double to left center.

Worcester scored their eighth and final run of the game in the bottom of the second on a Breton double to left.

Down 8-1, the Bucs score a run in the third to cut the deficit to 7-2 on a Haley single, scoring Sances. They would add another run in the fourth as Luciano came across on a fielder's choice.

Dylan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass) would get Maritime within four runs in the sixth with a home run to right center but, that would be all the Bucs could get back, falling in game two, 8-4.

Worcester went 7-for-24 at the plate in game two. Jake Breton had two hits on the day, one of which was a double.

Ferrara, Galvin and Kolanda each drove in two runs.

All doubles, the Lancers had four extra base hits in the game.

Worcester worked five walks, struck out four times and left five runners on base.

Maritime batted 6-for-28 in game two. Simone had the lone multi-hit game for Maritime in the loss.

The Buccaneers had three extra base hits, a Simone double, a Luciano triple and the Sullo home run.

Maritime walked twice, struck out three times and left six runners on base.

 

Up Next: The Buccaneers will host Worcester State in the rubber match of their three game conference series on Monday at 4pm at Commodore Hendy Field
