Bucs Tame Lions on Taylor’s Point

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Maritime faced off against 3-9 Emerson College on Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field. After struggling to score runs the past week, the Bucs scored 11 to earn an 11-5 victory over the Lions.

 

How It Happened

Emerson scored first on a leadoff home run by shortstop Joe Paladino (Bedminster, N.J.), and the Buccaneers answered in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs of their own, Two of which came on a two-run single down the left field line by designated hitter Matt Langan (North Easton, Mass), giving the Academy and early 4-1 advantage.

The Lions clawed back in the second to come within one run, 4-3. Lion pitching kept the Bucs off the scoreboard in the bottom of the innings and started Colin Thoener (Foxborough, Mass) was able to do the same for the Bucs in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third frame, Maritime extended their lead, scoring four times, including on Jackson Simone's (Seattle, Wash) first home run of the season.

Each team scored a run in the fourth inning, both were plated by way of home runs. Joe Cuccio (Jefferson, N.J.) hit his for Emerson in the top of the frame, Nick Haley (Hanson, Mass) his one for Maritime, Haley's third of the week, in the bottom of the fourth.

Now 9-4 in favor of the Bucs, the Lions scored a fifth and final run in the top of the sixth on a double steal in which Josh Cohen (Corte Madera, Calif) stole home.

Maritime added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh and Wyatt Major (Mattapoisett, Mass) and John Teehan (Boston, Mass) shut the Lions down on the mound to take the 11-5 win. With the win, the Bucs inprove to 3-8 on the season.

Maritime went 11-for-34 at the plate, drew eight walks and struck out just 5 times.

Langan, Haley and Simone each had an extra base hit.

Schlapak, Simone, Langan and Marley Dembitzki (North Dartmouth, Mass) each had multi-hit games for the Bucs.

The Buccaneers stole four bases in the game.

Emerson went 8-for-35 at the plate, drew just two walks and struck out 10 times.

Cuccio was the lone player for the Lions with two or more hits.

Three of Emerson's eight hits were for extra bases, including the two home runs.

Coming in to the game with 41 stolen bases on the season, the Lions stole seven more in today's game.
