Baseball Picked To Share MASCAC Crown With Westfield State, Salem State In 2017 Coaches Pre-Season Poll

Massachusetts Maritime is picked to share the 2017 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball championship in a vote of the league’s coaches, as the Buccaneers join Westfield State and Salem State as the top pick in this year’s conference pre-season poll released earlier today.

Head Coach Mike Kelley’s squad received one first place vote and garnered 42 points to share the top position in this year’s poll, as Westfield State’s Owls captured for first place votes while Salem State’s Vikings picked up the other three.  Fitchburg State and Worcester State follow in the respective fourth and fifth place positions in the rankings, while Bridgewater State and Framingham State tied for sixth place and MCLA rounds out the poll in the eighth spot.

Massachusetts Maritime welcomes back 17 letterwinners and five positional starters from a squad that posted 24 victories (the third highest single-season win total in school history) and made its inaugural appearance in the MASCAC championship game.  Kelley, a member of the Buccaneer Athletic Hall of Fame, also guided his squad to a second straight appearance in the ECAC New England semifinals during his rookie campaign in 2016.

Kelley’s crew kicks off the 2017 season on Monday afternoon when Massachusetts Maritime squares off with Houghton (N.Y.) in a non-league doubleheader at Lawnwood Park in Fort Pierce, Fla. beginning at 12:30 p.m. EDT.
