FINAL:              CLARK 3, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 0

WORCESTER, Mass. --  Freshman Callum Sawden (Old Lyme, Conn.) scattered four hits and struck out seven over seven shutout innings of work on the mound to lead Clark to a 3-0 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Tuesday afternoon at Granger Diamond.

The host Cougars (23-9) plated the only run they would need in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) singled, stole second and scored on freshman Dylan Horn’s (Sterling, Conn.) RBI single, and Clark extended that margin to 2-0 in the fifth on a run-scoring groundout by junior Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.).  The hosts added their final tally in the seventh when freshman Kyle Shaw (Litchfield, N.H.) reached on an infield single, stole second and scored on junior Teddy Downing’s (Cambridge, Mass.) RBI single, and Sawden took care of the rest on the mound in combining with three relivers to complete the shutout.

Horn rapped out three hits on the day for the winners, as he and Downing combined for five of the Cougars’ seven hits.  Sawden improved to 2-0 on the season with the triumph for Clark, while senior Joe Gouveia (Nashua, N.H.) came on to record the final out and earn his first save of the spring.  Junior Connor Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.) collected two hits as part of a six-hit attack in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (9-11), as freshman Philip Holler (Hingham, Mass.) allowed four hits and a pair of runs while striking out five over the first five innings of work to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Framingham State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at Noon, while Clark heads to Babson Park, Mass. for a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference contest with Babson on Wednesday afternoon that begins at 3:30 p.m.
