BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Freshman Logan Sullo (Dartmouth, Mass.) rapped out three hits as Massachusetts Maritime took advantage of four errors to post a 6-2 victory over Bridgewater State in the opener of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader played Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.  Senior Adam Mullen (Fairhaven, Mass.) tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout and struck out five in the nightcap to give the visiting Bears a 2-0 triumph and gain a split of the twinbill.

The host Buccaneers (9-9, 4-4 MASCAC) used three unearned runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead in the opening contest, as the visiting Bears (5-13, 2-6 MASCAC) committed three consecutive errors, including an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt by freshman Connor Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.), who later scored on a steal of home.  Bridgewater State got a run back in the third on an RBI single by senior Kevin Sugermeyer (Hampden, Mass.), and the visitors closed to within a run in the fourth when sophomore Billy Mitchell (Walpole, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch.  Massachusetts Maritime extended its advantage to 5-2 in the fifth on a fielder’s choice groundout by sophomore Jonah Olsen (Falmouth, Mass.) and Connor Kennedy’s RBI single, and the hosts closed out the scoring in the sixth with an unearned run on an error.

Freshman William Keane (Braintree, Mass.) added two hits as part of an eight-hit attack in the opener for the Buccaneers, as junior Kevin Kwedor (Marshfield, Mass.) improved to 4-2 on the season in allowing a run and striking out three over the first three frames.  Junior Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn.) scattered a pair of hits and fanned four over the final three innings to earn his second save in three days for the Buccaneers, as he has tossed 15 2/3 scoreless innings over his last three appearances.  Junior Travis Ritchie (Taunton, Mass.) collected two of Bridgewater State’s eight hits in the opening game setback, as junior David Holmes (North Easton, Mass.) went the distance on the mound for the Bears in allowing just two earned runs and fanning four to fall to 1-4 on the spring.

Bridgewater State provided Mullen with all the support he would need in the top of the fifth of the nightcap, as senior Sean Brooks (Braintree, Mass.) snapped a scoreless game with an RBI single and scored an insurance run on an error.  Mullen took care of the rest on the mound for the Bears, as he allowed just a lead-off double by Buccaneer senior Greg Downs (Marshfield, Mass.) in the fourth while overcoming four walks to improve to 1-1 on the season.  Five different players collected hits in the nightcap win for the visitors, as senior Zac Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime in allowing one earned run and striking out three to fall to 0-2.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to North Adams, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on MCLA in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader that begins at 1:00 p.m., while Bridgewater State travels to Milton, Mass. tomorrow afternoon to square off with Curry in a non-league outing beginning at 3:30 p.m.
