BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Greg Wiggin’s (Marshfield, Mass.) two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 4-2 victory over league-leading Salem State in the opener of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.  Sophomore Cory Collins (Winthrop, Mass.) salvaged a split of the twinbill for the Vikings by tossing a one-hit, nine-strikeout gem in a 3-0 nightcap triumph.

The host Buccaneers (9-9, 3-3 MASCAC) took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat of the opener when senior Michael Vargas (Framingham, Mass.) led off with a double and scored on a one-out RBI groundout by sophomore Zachary Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.), but the visiting Vikings (13-12, 5-1 MASCAC) grabbed a 2-1 third inning advantage on RBI singles by senior Ryan Kane (Nahant, Mass.) and junior Chris Cocci (Wakefield, Mass.).  Massachusetts Maritime evened matters in the bottom of the frame when Vargas walked, stole second and scored on senior Andrew Saari’s (Framingham, Mass.) two-out single, and the score remained tied until the sixth when Wiggin laced a 1-2 pitch into right center for his decisive two-bagger.  Salem State put the tying runs on base in the top of the seventh, but sophomore Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) was able to induce a double-play grounder and record a strikeout to end the game and give the Buccaneers the triumph.

Wiggin collected two of Massachusetts Maritime’s seven hits in support of Genereux, who scattered eight hits and struck out three while allowing an earned run to improve to 3-1 on the season for the Buccaneers.  Cocci rapped out a pair of safeties in the opening game setback for Salem State, as senior Jeff Borges (Westport, Mass.) went the distance and struck out nine in falling to 2-3 on the season for the Vikings.

Collins was the story of the nightcap for Salem State, as he took a no-hitter two outs into the bottom of the seventh before Wiggin blooped a 1-0 pitch into right center for the lone Massachusetts Maritime safety of the contest.  The Vikings gave Collins the only run he would need in the third on sophomore Kevin Salines’ (Melrose, Mass.) RBI single, and the visitors added a pair of insurance tallies in the fifth on run-scoring singles off the bat of Kane and junior Geury Alonzo (Boston, Mass.).  Collins allowed just four base runners in walking a pair to go with his nine strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season for Salem State, which received two hits each from Salines and senior Evan Valcourt (Salisbury, Mass.) as part of an eight-hit attack.  Senior Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound in the second game for the Buccaneers, allowing six hits and all three runs while fanning one to fall to 1-1 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Fitchburg, Mass. on Monday afternoon to take on Fitchburg State in a MASCAC twinbill that begins at Noon, while Salem State hosts Westfield State in a MASCAC doubleheader as well on Monday afternoon in Salem, Mass. that begins at 1:00 p.m.
