Buccaneer SAAC Helps Collect Over 200 Donations For Children's Cove Toy Drive

Over the past three weeks, the Massachusetts Maritime Student-Athlete Advisory Committee helped gather donations of over 200 new and unwrapped toys in support of the Academy’s annual toy drive to benefit Children’s Cove of Cape Cod.

Dozens of toys have been donated from across campus and local communities over that time span and were collected from under the Christmas tree at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center on Monday morning for distribution at Children’s Cove later this week.

Children’s Cove is a freestanding, child-friendly facility designed to ensure that victims of child sexual abuse and their non-offending family members have access to support and services in a safe, respectful and compassionate environment.

The Buccaneer SAAC has been very active in the local community over the past two months, as student-athletes also helped collect boxed and canned goods as part of its annual Food Drive during the Cranberry Bowl football game with Bridgewater State at Clean Harbors Stadium on November 16th.  Those items were donated to the Bourne Food Pantry prior to the Thanksgiving holiday and helped feed over 40 area families.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone in the Massachusetts Maritime family who helped make the toy drive a huge success once again,” Buccaneer and MASCAC SAAC President 1/c Chris Gallagher says.  “In this special season of giving, our SAAC is honored to help bring joy to the lives of children and families in our local community.”

During the upcoming Sea Term, the Buccaneer SAAC will be hosting a pair of basketball tournaments for Southeastern Massachusetts Special Olympics in January and February and will also assist Cape Cod Special Olympics in events during the spring semester.  The SAAC is also honored to conduct the annual Peter Ryan Memorial Triathlon on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 and will be involved in other activities at both the institutional and conference levels in the spring.
