Opening Round – Game #3

Thursday, May 18, 2017

Whitehouse Field, Harwich, Mass.

FINAL:              SUFFOLK 4, ST. JOHN FISHER 0

HARWICH, Mass. --  Senior righthander Chuck Gibson (Malden, Mass.) tossed a five-hit shutout and struck out nine to lead sixth-seeded Suffolk to a 4-0 victory over third-seeded St. John Fisher in opening round play of the 2017 NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional Championships Thursday evening at Whitehouse Field.

The Rams (27-15) advance to take on the winner of the final opening round game between second-seeded Arcadia and seventh-seeded Worcester State on Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. in a winner’s bracket game, while the Cardinals (30-11) take on the loser of the final opening round contest on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

Suffolk scored the only run it would need in the top of the third on an error, and that margin held up until the top of the eighth when the Rams tacked on three insurance tallies on bases loaded walks to seniors Luke Ronchi (Randolph, N.J.) and Kevin Belskie (Norristown, Pa.) as well as junior Brady Chant (Warwick, R.I.).  Gibson took care of the rest for the winners, as he threw 79 of his 125 pitches for strikes to earn his eighth win in nine decisions on the spring.

Junior Ryan Fahy (Herkimer, N.Y.) collected three of St. John Fisher’s five hits on the night, as freshman Anthony Brophy (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) locked up in a pitcher’s duel with Gibson for seven plus innings in allowing just one earned run and fanning four to suffer his first setback of the season in falling to 9-1.
