FINAL:              UMASS BOSTON 13, SUFFOLK 4

 

HARWICH, Mass. – Junior Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and three RBI as the University of Massachusetts Boston defeated Suffolk University 13-4 in a winner’s bracket game of the 2017 NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional at Whitehouse Field.

 

UMass Boston (36-10) advances to the championship round of the regional tomorrow afternoon which will be played at Whitehouse Field beginning at 4 p.m.  Suffolk (28-16) will face the winner of the Babson College/Salve Regina University elimination game that will be played later tonight, tomorrow in an elimination game beginning at noon.

 

Frosceno led the Beacons at the plate collecting hits in his first three at bats of the day, while stealing two bases.  Senior Luke Nagle (Pembroke, Mass.) also went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.  Senior Anthony Searles (Shelton, Conn.) recorded a pair of hits including a double and scored a run while driving in one.

 

The Beacons plated five runs in their first at bat of the day and added six more in the next three innings as they built an 11-0 in the fourth.  The big hit in the open inning was a two run triple to left by Frosceno, while Nagle and Herzog added RBI basehits.

 

Suffolk got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as junior Seth Coiley (Arlington, Mass.) and senior Matt Brenner (Eliot, Me.) led off the inning with back-to-back singles.  Junior Greg Speliotis (Salem, Mass.) followed with an infield single to load the bases and after an out senior Kevin Belski (Norristown, Pa.) delivered a two RBI single to right.  The two teams traded two runs apiece in the sixth inning to reach the final margin.

 

Suffolk was led offensively by Belski who went 1-for-3 with three RBI while Brenner and Speliotis each went 2-for-3.  Brenner scored a pair of runs with a walk, while Speliotis crossed the plate once.

Senior Dan Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) earned the win on the hill for the Beacons going six innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk.  Worth Walrod (Dedham, Mass.) took the loss for the Rams going two innings and allowing 10 earned runs on 11 hits with a strikeouts.
